The REAL ID is a federally mandated standard for state-issued driver's licenses and identification cards. It was established in response to the Real ID Act, which was passed in 2005 to enhance the security of personal identification documents.
The REAL ID is intended to improve the reliability and accuracy of state-issued identification documents, making it harder for terrorists and other criminals to evade detection by using fraudulent IDs.
Beginning on May 7, 2025, every air traveler 18 years of age and older will need a REAL ID-compliant driver's license or identification card, or another TSA-acceptable form of identification, to fly within the United States.
